MME Program with a Entrepreneurship Concentration

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Houston offers a unique Entrepreneurship Concentration within the Master of Mechanical Engineering (MME) program. This track is ideal for students who want to combine advanced engineering training with entrepreneurial thinking, innovation strategy, and real-world impact through technology commercialization and product development.

    • The Bauer Entrepreneurship Certificate (from Bauer College of Business)
    • The Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship (EPIE) Certificate (from Cullen College of Engineering)
    • Or both certificates with just one additional course (up to 33 credit hours total)

1. Bauer Entrepreneurship Certificate

Best for: Students focused on startup ventures, technology commercialization, or corporate business-side innovation strategy and product management.

Required Courses (3 total):

  • ENTR 7390 – Technology Entrepreneurship
  • One of:
    • ENTR 7381 – Tech Commercialization
    • MARK 7374 – New Product Development
  • One approved elective, such as:
    • ENTR 7393 – Customer Discovery
    • FINA 7327 – Entrepreneurial Finance
    • ENTR 7336 – Entrepreneurship Overview
    • MARK 7373 – B2B Marketing / Value-Based Selling
2. EPIE Certificate

Best for: Students aiming to lead in engineering innovation, applied R&D, or technical entrepreneurship at startups or interested in product management roles.

Required Courses (3 total):

  • ENTR 7390 – Technology Entrepreneurship
  • MECE 6397 – Special Topics in Tech Commercialization / Entrepreneurship
  • One of:
    • ENTR 7381 – Tech Commercialization
    • MARK 7374 – New Product Development
3. Dual Certificate Option

Best for: Students with a strong commitment to both the business and engineering aspects of innovation.

Required Courses (4 total):

  • ENTR 7390 – Technology Entrepreneurship
  • MECE 6397 – Special Topics in Tech Commercialization / Entrepreneurship
  • One of ENTR 7381 or MARK 7374
  • One advanced innovation elective, such as:
    • ENGI 6397 – Advanced Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship
    • Or an approved course combining technology and entrepreneurship

 

Program Flexibility

  • The MME program allows up to 9 credit hours (3 courses) from outside the MAE Department.
  • The Entrepreneurship Concentration is fully integrated into the MME degree plan—no extension required for one certificate.
  • Students opting for both certificates typically finish with 33 credit hours.
  • Individual course substitutions between Bauer and Engineering electives may be allowed on a case-by-case basis to support academic goals.
